Meet the Duskies
Dusky Dolphins are medium-sized dolphins, easily recognised by their striking two-tone colouring — dark grey on top, pale underneath, with a distinct hourglass pattern along their sides. But it’s their behaviour that really sets them apart. Unlike many dolphin species, duskies are extremely social and playful. They live in pods that can number in the hundreds (sometimes even thousands!), and they’re often seen leaping, tail-slapping, and riding the bow waves of passing boats.
In Kaikōura, these energetic dolphins are around year-round, often found close to shore thanks to the deep underwater canyon that runs right along the coast. This unique marine geography brings cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface, creating a buffet that attracts everything from tiny plankton to mighty sperm whales — and of course, plenty of dolphins.
A Dolphin’s Day Out
While they make their acrobatics look effortless, Dusky Dolphins are actually highly intelligent hunters. They work together in groups to herd small fish and squid into tight schools before darting in to feed — teamwork at its most elegant. Between meals, they play. Scientists believe this play strengthens social bonds and helps younger dolphins develop coordination and communication skills. To us, it just looks like pure joy!
